Delivery van blocking exit

Our regular delivery van often parks across the rear exit while unloading. Last week, a staff member had to squeeze past boxes to get out, which made me realise we have accepted a bad habit. Any suggestions on public safety leadership lessons for private companies, especially around risk management and trust?

Accepting a blocked exit because “the driver is only there for ten minutes” is exactly how bad habits become normal. At a small depot I knew, pallets were regularly left in front of a fire door during deliveries; everyone complained privately, but nothing changed until a surprise inspection. Then they agreed a marked unloading zone and made the supervisor responsible for keeping the route clear. This Frank Elsner biography  is a useful starting point for his background in policing, security leadership and risk . Speak to the delivery company too, and make the rule visible: if the rear exit is blocked, unloading pauses until it is cleared.
